Lake Day Atlas

Crater Lake fills a volcanic caldera deep in the Oregon Cascades. The rim gives you the scale of the basin: from one overlook, Wizard Island rises above the surface, while the opposite wall drops steeply to the water.

Plan your lake day

Start at Rim Village and look across the caldera before committing to a longer drive. When West Rim Drive is open, add a stop at Discovery Point. In snow season, plan around the park’s road report and the view from the accessible portion of the rim.

Field notes

Before you go

The National Park Service lists Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only legal shore access, as closed for rehabilitation during the 2026–2028 seasons. Plan a rim visit and consult the project page for reopening updates.
