Lake Day Atlas

On the U.S. stretch of Lake Champlain, the Adirondacks line the New York horizon and the Green Mountains rise to the east. The same water that draws sailors and touring paddlers once carried commercial canal boats. Many of their wrecks still lie on the lakebed.

Plan your lake day

Build a paddling day around one section of the Lake Champlain Paddlers’ Trail. Choose an entry and turnaround on the same shore. For a history day, explore the Maritime Museum’s shipwreck records, which identify wreck types, locations and which sites are part of Vermont’s underwater preserves.

Field notes

Before you go

The paddlers’ trail includes privately owned stops with conditions on access. Check the trail guide for the exact landing or campsite you plan to use. Judge any open-water crossing against the wind forecast and the group’s experience.
