Lake Day Atlas

Torch Lake’s turquoise shallows make it easy to see the change from shallow water to deep blue. Access takes more planning than the view suggests. Start with one of the public landings or township parks along this long northern Michigan lake.

On the water

Plan your lake day

For a short paddle, choose an access point near Alden or Eastport and trace the shoreline until it is time to turn back. The Torch Conservation Center describes launches and longer routes for groups arranging a shuttle. Pick your swimming access separately if that is the main reason for the visit.

Field notes

Before you go

Road-end access points differ in parking and facilities. Read the notes for the specific landing before loading kayaks. The Elk Rapids ice stop is useful when approaching the south end from the west.
